In loving memory of Maureen Nettelfield
Maureen Nettelfield was a very fit and healthy active member of the Australian Defence Force (ADF) which she joined as a career change later in life and against many odds, showed her dedication and zeal for military service. Those who knew her story were encouraged and inspired.
A loving Mother of three and Grandmother of one, Maureen had hoped to return home for a visit in January to celebrate her granddaughter’s second birthday and as the youngest of five siblings (all girls). Maureen’s visits back on home ground were always looked forward to.
Maureen lost her fight for life at just 57 years of age, just a few days before her Granddaughter’s birthday celebrations. Being unwell for a couple of months, the ADF released Maureen for some rest and recreation to stay with her sister at her favourite place at Toomulla Beach in North Queensland. Within a week Maureen was very unwell, barely able to walk or move her arms and experiencing difficulty with speech and thinking process. She was transported by ambulance to the Townsville University Hospital where Maureen was diagnosed with CJD after numerous tests.
It was difficult to come to terms with the diagnosis of such a rare and horrible disease which took Maureen from us just nine weeks later.
