And so I ran……..

On Sunday 17th September 2023, I will be running a half marathon in the Adelaide City to Bay, to raise vital funds for the CJD Support Group Network (CJDSGN). The CJDSGN supports research work into CJD and other prion diseases.

Prion diseases are a rare, but fatal, group of neurodegenerative diseases, which currently have no cure. They affect about 1-2 people per million, per year.

The CJDSGN also provides help and information for families like ours, which are affected by this truly awful disease.

In August 2020, just over a year after he was diagnosed with genetic CJD, my wonderful Dad, Paul Sharpe, passed away. Dad had lost his own mother to the same disease 30 years earlier. Due to Covid restrictions in 2020, I was unable to be with Dad in his final moments. They also meant I could not be there to support my Mum or brother, as we all dealt with the loss of such a brilliant, accomplished , highly-intelligent, generous and humble man.

My brother and I both have a 1:2 chance of also developing genetic CJD and this has played a huge part in motivating me to run this 21.1km. Dad was always extremely fit and healthy. He loved to explore the great outdoors, and nowhere more so than here in Australia. I feel a great connection with my Dad whenever I am outside running. I can hear him telling me not to give up, feel his hand on my shoulder when those last few kms are hurting and I know he is proud of what I am doing to help raise awareness of CJD.

And so I ran. I run for those who are no longer with us, for those who can no longer run and for those who, one day, might not be able to run any more.

The CJD Support Group Network Australia will refrain from providing advice about the tax or other treatment of gifts and will encourage donors to seek guidance from their own professional advisers to assist them in the process of making their donation.

The CJD Support Group Network Australia will accept donations of cash or publicly traded securities. Gifts of in-kind services will be accepted at the discretion of the CJD Support Group Network Australia.
